Administrative Structure

Since Nowruzlu Wetland is a protected area, it has an administrative and management structure that is responsible for protecting the wetland and providing a place for wise utilization. Protecting the wetland’s ecosystem and its valuable species and arranging the coordination to exploit the values and functions of the wetland are among the main responsibilities of the administrative structure. Nowruzlu Wetland is under the management of General Department of Environmental Protection of West Azerbaijan Province. At the county level, it is under the management of Environmental Department of Miandoab. Protecting the wetland ecosystem, repairing the previous adverse effects imposed to its environment and preventing the destruction and pollution of the wetland are other duties of administration board both at provincial and county levels. Besides the General Department of Environmental Protection of West Azerbaijan Province, several other organizations are involved in the management and protection of Nowruzlu Wetland, including:

  • Governorate (Miandoab County): The most important responsibility of this organization is establishing governance coordination and managerial affairs.
  • Miandoab Water Affairs Department: This organization is responsible for managing water resources, especially dams and floodgates which affects the amount of water in the wetland.
  • Natural Resources Department (General Department of Natural Resources of West Azerbaijan Province): One of the most important responsibilities of this institution is protecting the wetland’s vegetation and implementation of livestock and rangeland projects.
  • Agricultural Jihad Organization of Miandoab County (Agricultural Jihad of West Azerbaijan Province): The affairs related to agriculture around the wetland and its drainage basin are carried out by this organization, which directly and indirectly affects the quality and quantity of water in the wetland.
  • General Directorate of Fisheries of West Azerbaijan Province: Provincial management of aquaculture activities and conservation of wetland fish stocks.
