The wetland’s tourism guide

On the southern shore of Lake Urmia and the southeast of West Azerbaijan Province, there is a fertile land that has been inhabited and ruled by different ethnic groups for thousands of years. The city of Miandoab (Qushachay) is one of the fertile and plain counties of West Azerbaijan, which is famous for having a temperate and very favorable climate, therefore, it used to be the winter capital of the Ilkhanate.

When is the best time to visit the wetland?

Nowruzlu wetland is located in the south of Lake Urmia and in one of the most fertile plains of Iran. With its relatively hot summers and relatively cold winters, this wetland has a variable climate in different seasons. Therefore, the best time to travel there might be spring and early summer. The first weeks of autumn, when the cold weather has not arrived yet but the heat of summer has vanished away is a good time to visit this beautiful wetland.

One-Day Trip to Nowruzlu Wetland

In a one-day program, you can spend about 4 hours to visit the wetland and its surrounding. This time will be spent visiting the wetland and its landscapes, bird watching, eating and spending time in the surrounding villages. Note that as the wetland and its surrounding is protected area, there are currently no suitable facilities for tourists and nature lovers. Hence, make sure to have suitable facilities for tourism when visiting this place. If you are travelling to the wetland on a spring day, you can have a visit to Miandoab county and its historical and scenic places by organizing a little more coherent planning.

Overnight stay program in the area

No facilities have been established in the protected area of Nowruzlu Wetland. Therefore, if you are planning to set up a camp and stay in the area at night, you will not have an easy task ahead and you must have complete equipment. There is no place to stay in the villages around the area and usually the locals do not rent rooms or houses to travelers unless the necessary arrangements have been made with them in advance. You can settle in the hotel in Miandoab, named Berenjian Hotel, which is a two-star hotel with relatively good accommodation facilities.

Access routes to Nowruzlu wetland

If you move from Qushachay Square in Miandoab towards Shahin Dezh, you will have to pass 19 km to Aydisheh village, which is attached to the wetland. In this village, you can start visiting the wetland from its northeastern part. If you want to start tourism from southern side of the wetland, the route to Nowruzlu wetland is about 19 km long, taking about 28 minutes. Of course, to take this route, you have to cross a dirt road that passes through beautiful fields. Stop before reaching the crown of the dam and walk the rest of the way. By searching “Nowruzlu Wetland” in mobile map applications, you can easily access the location of the wetland and find the exact distance and time.
